Framework overview

The framework provides a structured yet flexible collection of skills that will help coaches create positive cycling experiences for young riders.

How to use the framework

The framework includes 4 progression levels that cater to riders of all abilities, encouraging them to improve both on and off the bike while fostering a love for the sport. You can celebrate rider progress as they move through the levels, or pick and mix skills to create new cycling experiences you think your riders will enjoy. We encourage you to explore all the resources and attend the webinars to get the most from this framework. We've gathered feedback from coaches throughout the development of the product to help us design a flexible framework we hope works for you. We look forward to hearing how you use this product with your young riders.

"Good ideas there. I see the digital side. I can see myself going through it with kids and parents, getting them involved."

Mark Waller, Lead Coach at Lincoln Wheelers

Why the framework exists

We know that other sports, including swimming, gymnastics and athletics, have long-running and impactful skill development programmes. We hope to engage a new and next generation of cyclists. We hope to inspire them to achieve their ambitions on a bike, whatever that may be.

Skills can help develop technical competence on a bike, confidence when riding, social skills and knowledge on where to ride and what with. They can help young and old people alike develop skills that lead to a happy and fulfilled life.

What you’ll find on this website

All the information you need to successfully develop a progression scheme that develops people as well as riders, including an overview of the framework, how to adapt it to suit your club, assessing riders, and session ideas.

Who the framework is for

Our ambition is to support coaches, clubs, leisure centres and parents create positive cycling experiences for young riders. We know how important clubs and coaches are on that journey so for this phase of testing we are focussed on making sure the framework is designed to meet the needs of coaches in a variety of cycling environments. We are especially interested in feedback from clubs who are actively using the framework with young riders. This phase of testing takes places between November 2024 - January 2025. We'll use your feedback to improve the product.

"Looks really exciting... something we’ve wanted for a long time. Good for children to see their progress."

Louise Hughes, Community Coach
