How to use the Framework

How to approach developing a progression scheme for your club.

Purpose of the framework

To help clubs create their own development programme, showcasing riders' progress through rewards and recognition.

This initiative will also enrich the wealth of knowledge within the coaching network, creating opportunities to share the great work that various clubs are doing and fostering collaboration among coaches. See our Support page for opportunities to connect and share with other coaches.

Why create a development programme

A development programme can help riders of all ages build essential skills and confidence while fostering a love for cycling. By providing clear progression pathways, you'll create an engaging environment that develops the whole person - building technical competence, social skills, and confidence while keeping members motivated and active. Working with the framework you can integrate the levels into your club delivery.

An overview of the framework

The framework has been designed to support riders to progress through the 4 levels.

Many of the of the experiences offer riders the opportunity to pick up Rewards and Awards, mentioned below. It's up to individual clubs to decide how to integrate these into their sessions.

Structure of the framework

The framework contains 4 levels

  • Balance - For riders to have a fun, exciting and rewarding introduction to the bike
  • Pedal - For riders to build confidence, comfort and control on a pedal bike
  • Challenge - For riders to advance, explore and discover new skills and experiences
  • Advanced - For riders to perform skills in challenging environments effectively and feel developed enough to move into British Cycling Talent Development Centres

Each level has 3 activity types

  • Core Skills - Fundamental cycling skills regardless of bike, activity or terrain
  • Specific Skills - Cycling skills influenced by bike, activity or terrain
  • Experiences - Opportunities off the bike can offer, including travel, racing, personal development and community engagement

There are 3 types of achievement

  • Levels - To complete a level, we suggest that riders complete a number of skills and experiences within that level
  • Rewards - To earn a reward, riders must complete the associated skill or experience (see all Rewards)
  • Awards - To earn an Award, riders must demonstrate certain attributes, often connected to a skill or experience (see all Awards)

Using the framework

The Youth Development Framework is a set of tools, serving as guidance.

We are encouraging deliverers to be creative in how they use the framework, or parts of it, to develop their own riders development schemes.

For example, you might want to reward riders when they complete of levels, such as Balance or Pedal. Or, you might want to break down levels further and introduce riders to some core skills, specific skills or experiences over a particular number of sessions. Or, you might want to introduce the Rewards or Awards element of the framework, that's fine too.

We know that some clubs already have their own reward scheme or development programme. For those clubs, we hope this framework will support and enhance your existing offerings.
